The Thrill of Permitting

Often times the permit process is a step that is not considered when new signage is desired, which can cause many issues - each jurisdiction has their own set of rules & codes for what they allow in their area. The overall size of the sign, colors, fonts, placement on the building (and more!) all play a role into whether the City or County will approve the signage. Thankfully, the permit experts at SignAffects are always ready to take care of the permitting process for our customers. This includes not only creating and filing the necessary paperwork, but keeping track of the permit's status and following up with the proper officials when necessary. It is not always an easy process, but in the State of Ohio, whomever is to install the signage is legally required to pull the permit, so we see it as a necessary step in doing things correctly from the beginning.

Shown here is a recent snippet on the process through the City of Columbus (Ohio) of all the steps development projects must pass through. Though not all of these steps are specific to signs, many of them are, and as the codes evolve and change, having someone on your side to know what hoops must be jumped through is an essential part of your signage getting done.

OSU's Extra Large Window Vinyl

We do our best to get it removed and replaced as quickly as possible, knowing that this is definitely not good business! We have finally moved in to warmer weather here in Ohio, which means SignAffects is getting busy!

Whether it's digging holes for signs, laying vinyl or major outdoor projects, we now have much more flexibility to get it done sooner. Be sure to give us a call right away to get your project started!

Our hours are always Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm, but when necessary our install crew doesn't mind doing some weekend work. This is especially helpful if you have unique hours or work in a busy area (like downtown Columbus), where it's easier to work on the weekends than interrupt busy traffic.

Whatever your project may be, we look forward to working on it with you and creating the perfect sign!

Importance of safety meetings

Each month, the SignAffects team sits down together and goes over a predetermined safety topic which directly relates to our staff and workflow. This process is important so that everyone understands why we need to be safe, how we can continue to be safe and necessary steps to take in case something goes wrong.

Unfortunately, accidents can happen. The best thing anyone (and every business) can do is to prepare for the worst, and hope for the best. Most of our topics cover areas which specifically relate to our install team; primarily because they are in the elements every day and deal with the majority of dangerous situations. However, the discussions are made to include everyone on the team; from the owner, to install, to the office assistant.

Topics we have covered include welding and torch safety, weather safety, first aid, lock out/ tag out, driving safety, safety harness usage, CPR training and more. We take our training seriously because we want our employees to go home safely to their families at the end of the day. We also want to be a good example of a company that sets a high bar in safety; not only for other companies to look up to, but also for our customers to know we are proud of what we do and we strive to do it well.

Variations of color, AKA THE dress

If you haven't heard about "the dress" by now you might want to do a Google search or check your Facebook. The conversation is regarding one picture of a dress, and what two colors the dress is? It's been narrowed down to two choices:

1. White and gold
2. Black and blue

Even here at SignAffects some of us have different opinions on the color - which makes us realize why there may be discrepancies when we work with our customers to choose colors for their signs! We typically use Pantone color matching system when trying to match a color or choosing a new color. This way, the customer and designer are looking at the same shade. If it is a very specific color or color scheme, we'll have an example printed so that it can be seen in person - computer screens are not always reliable because they may show a variation in colors from one to the next. Now, whether or not it looks like two different colors to each person is another story! Sending a proof to our customers and having it approved is one of the most important steps in the process of making a new design, or recreating an old one.

Old Man Winter

Unfortunately, this winter has been as bitterly cold as last winter! While that's not a huge surprise, it does make our job a bit more challenging. Projects that include using our auger, our bucket trucks (or our SkyHook) or that involve applying vinyl to an outside product, will often have to be delayed. When the ground is frozen solid, winds are too excessive, or temperatures are simply too low for equipment/ products to work effectively, we do the best we can. This isn't to say that we can't start a project and have it ready to go as soon as we get a warm (40 degree!) day. Often times this will keep our shop busy in the meantime of waiting for the cold to break, and as well, you don't have to wait to order your project until Spring. Even on most days, our install team can still work on surveys, interior signage/ projects, panel replacements and other small miscellaneous jobs.

We are happy to get a project started for you at any time - even if the weather doesn't seem like it will cooperate. As stated previously, we will do everything we can to get the job done in a timely fashion and not keep you waiting! Sometimes Old Man Winter just doesn't want to play nice!

Smokin Signage!

Pigeon Forge, TN had more signage and advertising in a 10 mile strip than most in an entire community. This is not the best picture... however this sign was really cool! In fact it is smokin! Yes the sign created smoke which emitted from the false chimney.

We believe that Pigeon Forge, TN is the sign mecca of the Smokey Mountains.

Flat Vinyl Wrap

This design incorporated the use of flat vinyl on the main body of the car. The shiny vinyl is used to accent silhouettes of figures working out at the gym. This subtle effect really makes for a unique design that will really grab attention on the road. Sometimes what attracts the eye, is needing to look longer at something to really get the message. Cars are the perfect place for this strategy! I hope you get stuck waiting for a traffic light next to this local car!

The super high performance vinyl is carefully lined up on the vehicle. The back of the vinyl peels off like a giant sticker. We carefully use squeegees and other tools to push the air bubbles out of the vinyl for a nice smooth surface. Excess material is folded around the edges of the vehicle or cut away.

After the images are printed they are hung in the shop to dry. When they are completely dry the print is laminated.

Truck Wrap

Check out our work room today! Heather is working on preparing for an upcoming truck wrap next week. Heather designed this fantastic image with input from the customer. They now have all of their company vehicles wrapped using the same design.
Today the materials have been printed and are awaiting lamination. The vinyl lettering shown in the picture will be laid over top of the truck wrap. Heather uses an exacto knife to carefully pull the waste vinyl away. The letters that will be applied to the vehicle are left and ready to be masked for application.
